The Medical Equestrian Association (MEA) was founded in 1985 as a registered charity with the aim of raising medical standards at equestrian events across the country. Since 1988, HRH The Princess Royal has served as our President, and today the Association has grown to nearly 150 members. Our membership is made up of medical professionals providing vital medical services at equestrian sporting events, alongside honorary members with significant roles within the equestrian world.

The charity is run by elected officers from within our membership. We are proud to deliver a specialist training programme, open to all medical professionals working at or interested in equestrian events—not just MEA members. Sessions are free of charge to MEA members, and we encourage the wider distribution of details to any medical colleagues who may benefit.

Training and Moulage Sessions:

They run practical moulage sessions throughout the year at venues across the UK. These provide an invaluable opportunity to:

  • Practice and refine individual trauma skills

  • Apply trauma care in the unique context of the equestrian environment

  • Develop effective team dynamics in pressured scenarios

  • Manage full incident simulations from start to finish

  • Reflect on how to build team preparedness at real events

Each programme includes at least five scenarios, covering a wide range of potential incidents. Participants rotate roles as leader, team member, and observer. Scenarios address head, torso, and limb injuries, with particular focus on concussion and its management.

Practical training session:

The MEA will be conducting training on Friday 19th September on course at the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials

The MEA is dedicated to:

  • Improving medical support at equestrian events and ensuring those providing cover have a voice

  • Delivering specialist training for medical professionals in the management of equestrian accidents and trauma

  • Educating both medical personnel and the wider equestrian community about the risks of equestrian sport and the best approaches to first aid and injury management
